It’s week two of the One Room Challenge ™ hosted by Calling it Home and media partner House Beautiful and I am excited to share the progress we made on our space today!

If you are just checking in, you can see our week one plans and befores here:

WEEK ONE

Our week two was quite a productive one! We were able to get all the walls painted, all the grasscloth and mouldings installed, and I even started working on the staircase. It’s really all about the walls this week as you’ll see…

I had my design nailed down pretty early on for this space. I knew that I wanted grasscloth panels to enhance the symmetry of the fireplace wall and to help anchor the space. This really helps since our living room is open to the breakfast nook, kitchen, and entry way. Also, it helps with rug placement and floating furniture in the space. Basically, it gives order to an open concept floor plan. Our entry way and entry hall also received the full grasscloth treatment as you’ll see in the images below.

SELECTING OUR PAINT COLORS WITH BENJAMIN MOORE

Even though the grasscloth is front and center, the paint on the walls, trim, and staircase is just as important. I needed to find colors that compliment not only the grasscloth, but the furnishings, draperies, and the gold and wood elements of this space. The paint enhances every aspect of this design so it was important to get it right.

I enlisted the help of Benjamin Moore®and spent a few days going through fan decks and testing colors next to my samples for the drapes and wallpaper.

I decided on Simply White 2143-70 for the living room walls and a glossy finish of Simply White for the trim I had to paint for the mouldings. I used their Advance® Interior Paint in semi-gloss for all the trim and I will use it on the staircase too.

Also, I had to find a complimentary color for our staircase wall. The grasscloth has helped add texture and define the walls better, but the staircase paint as-is wasn’t working for me. I selected Edgecomb Gray HC-173 because it works well with the wood tones and the grasscloth. It’s light enough to define the staircase wall against the grasscloth walls, but warm enough to compliment the staircase banister.

Dave and I were both impressed with the quality of the Benjamin Moore® interior paint. I have used their paints on furniture projects before, but this is my first time using their paint on our walls. I used their Aura® Interior Paint for all the walls in an eggshell finish. It covers beautifully with a paint and primer combination. And–BIG AND–it is low VOC. No heavy paint fumes here. With kids and a dog, I didn’t have to worry about airing the house out and keeping people off the first floor. I highly recommend it if you have an interior painting project on the horizon. It’s one of the best interior wall paints I have worked with. We will definitely use it in the rest of the house as we work on rooms.

HUNTING FOR THE PERFECT STAIR RUNNER

I still have plenty of work left to do on the staircase, but at least I got the walls painted. I am going to decide on a stair runner and I have to paint the baluster spindles this week.

I am leaning towards this carpet from Karastan for the stair runner. It’s definitely my front-runner (pun intended!):

The stairs get measured for the runner today, so I have got to make up my mind soon! I like to take a walk on the wild side in my interiors from time to time… so, that antelope option is probably what I will do.

SELECTING OUR GRASSCLOTH WITH DECORATOR’S BEST

The grasscloth was the toughest decision I had to make for our walls only because I get grasscloth samples and I pretty much want them all for different reasons! Grasscloth is hands-down my favorite wall covering of all time. It’s classic and traditional and full of texture, but it can play nice with modern aspects of design too.

At the recommendation of Decorator’s Best, I selected from the new York Wallcoverings Grasscloth Collection. I went over a lot of samples and took the time to see the samples in daylight and at nighttime. They can look drastically different in different lighting conditions, so I suggest doing the same if you are trying to select one for your home.

I finally landed on York Metallic Grasscloth (VG4418) because of its black and gray variations and subtle metallic sheen. It feels masculine to me, like fine suiting. It’s made quite the impact on our makeover already!

This was our first time hanging grasscloth. We felt like it was something we could tackle together. I’ll be sharing the tips we found most useful after this challenge wraps. We definitely learned some good things that saved us a lot of headache and made the whole process easier.

Getting the wall design portion of this makeover almost finished is already such a game changer! I just love the added warmth and texture it gives the space.
